Gender differences

The gender of adult earless monitor lizards may be recognizable quite easily on the outside, yet in the case of young or sub-adult animals, it is hardly distinguishable. On an overall basis, adult male earless monitor lizards have a more ‘massive’ body compared to their female counterparts. Male animals have broader heads and larger as well as more ‘massive’ jaws than female earless monitor lizards.

The gender may be safely determined at the age of 3 years.
